Umm Ali - Egyptian bread pudding

This is a delicious Egyptian dessert consisting of pieces of bread or puff pastry, milk, sugar and coconut flakes. The resulting batter is sprinkled with raisins, hazelnuts, pistachios and cinnamon, and then baked in the oven until a crusty golden brown exterior is formed on top.


Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients


  • 1 (about 1/2 pound) puff pastry sheet

  • 1 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/2-2/3 cup nuts walnut/hazelnut (your preferred nuts)

  • 1/4 cup raisons

  • 1 Tablespoon sugar or to your liking

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup whipped cream



Cooking Steps


  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.

  2. Cut the puff sheet into squares and place in a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. Poke holes in each square using a fork and bake and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. In an oven safe dish (2 quarts size), break the baked squares into chunks.

  5. Mix in nuts of your choice.

  6. Heat milk in the microwave for 1 minute. Dissolve sugar in warm milk and add vanilla extract.

  7. Pour milk over the puff pastry and let it sink in for 5-10 minutes.

  8. Spread the whipped cream over the top and broil in the oven for 5-10 minutes until top is golden.

  9. Serve hot with more sweetened milk on the side.
